Active Business Services seems to be an extension of what we already do,” said Reilly. “We care about our communities, we believe in our team and we are committed to solving problems and improving the way we operate by challenging our own thinking to ensure continual improvement through creativity. We divert green bin waste and yard waste from landfills where it would become GHG to create compost.

Kevin Reilly (CPA, CA),

FAQs

Voluntary carbon markets are platforms where companies choose to purchase carbon credits to become more sustainable on their own initiative – without legal obligation. Participation is driven by corporate sustainability goals, brand values, or voluntary net-zero commitments.

Compliance carbon markets are legally mandated systems regulated by the government. Large energy producers, importers, and consumers are given strict limits on the amount of greenhouse gases they can emit. If a company exceeds their limit, they must comply through one of the available compliance options. Compliance markets also come with verification, tracking, and reporting to ensure emissions are calculated accurately.

Scope 1 emissions are the direct greenhouse gases produced from sources that a company physically owns or controls. Common examples include the emissions from burning fuel in on-site boilers, or gases released during direct manufacturing processes.

Scope 2 emissions are indirect greenhouse gases resulting from the purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling a company consumes to run its operations. While the company doesn’t produce these emissions directly, it is responsible for the emissions generated by the external facilities supplying this energy.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are tradable instruments that represent the environmental benefits of generating one megawatt-hour (MWh) of clean electricity (like wind, hydro, or solar). By purchasing RECs, a company can officially claim that its electricity comes from a renewable source which directly reduces Scope 2 emissions.

Carbon offsets are tradable instruments that represent benefits from verified environmental projects that reduce, avoid, or remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. Common projects include reforestation and carbon capture. Each offset represents one metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) reduced or removed from the atmosphere, allowing companies to offset their scope 1 emissions.
